Edward Abbey, a real curmudgeon, writes superbly and with passion about his American Southwest, with his slim and sometimes brusque dismissal of “know-how” being excused by his obvious love for the desert and the rocks and the snakes et al. His writing glows with that energy, and supplied me a springboard from which to lift my own environmental sensibility. A life changer, and a rattling fun learn, still, thirty plus years on.
When you have ever gone to a Nationwide Park, and been angered by roads that lead to every attraction, and tourists who don’t leave their automobiles, Edward Abbey agrees with you. He agrees very strongly with you. Right here he tells stories from his time within the deserts of Utah and Arizona. His description of Glen Canyon, before it was flooded to create Lake Powell, is the perfect I’ve ever read of a place. This is a nice, nearly poetic description of a place, the desert, that Abbey held a special love for. It’s exhausting to learn this e book and not bring away your own love of the canyons and mesas, arches and dunes, of the southwestern desert.
