Once Upon a Flock: Life with My Soulful Chickens

Once Upon a Flock: Life with My Soulful Chickens by Lauren Scheuer (Author). When longtime illustrator and lover of power tools Lauren Scheuer was looking for a challenge, she received the concept to lift yard chickens. Her husband and teenage daughter seemed on incredulously as coop sketches and hen-raising books stuffed their New England home. But when the chicks arrived, the whole family fell in love with the bundles of fluff and the wild adventures began.

Once Upon a Flock: Life with My Soulful Chickens stars Scheuer’s backyard chickens-with their large personalities, friendships, rivalries, and secrets-and the flock’s guardian, Marky the terrier. The flock consists of Hatsy, the little dynamo; Lil’White, the deranged and twisted Buff Orpington; Pigeon, the fixer-higher chicken; and Lucy, the particular-needs hen who bonds with Lauren and turns into a quick friend.

This charming story of Lauren’s life along with her quirky flock is crammed with moments of humor and heartbreak: When Lucy is stricken with a neurological illness, Lauren builds Lucy a particular-needs coop. When Lucy’s nesting instinct leads.

Lauren to act as a hen midwife of types, Lauren hatches a chick in her home. And when Lucy’s greatest friend Hatsy falls in poor health, Lauren finds an unlikely pal for Lucy in a hen named Pigeon, who requires an emergency tub and blow-dry. Enthusiastically immersing herself on the earth of her flock, Lauren discovers that love, loss, ardour, and resilience are usually not only components of the human experience, but of the rooster expertise as well. Throughout it all, Lauren paperwork the laughter and drama of her flock’s adventures together with her own whimsical images and illustrations. Directly humorous, poignant, and informative, As soon as Upon a Flock is a feathered story like no other.

This charming, witty e book stole my heart. Her illustrations and pictures made me laugh. You will love the tales of her backyard chickens. The e book made me want to go and hug my chickens.

I have been a very long time follower of Lauren's blog and was very excited to learn her book. It goes way more indepth than the charming sketches and stories she touches on.
