My Stroke of Insight reviews

My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey by Jill Bolte Taylor (Author). The astonishing New York Times bestseller that chronicles how a brain scientist’s own stroke led to enlightenment. On December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven- 12 months-outdated Harvard-educated mind scientist skilled a massive stroke within the left hemisphere of her brain. As she observed her mind deteriorate to the purpose that she couldn’t walk, talk, learn, write, or recall any of her life-all inside four hours-Taylor alternated between the euphoria of the intuitive and kinesthetic proper mind, through which she felt a way of complete nicely-being and peace, and the logical, sequential left mind, which recognized she was having a stroke and enabled her to hunt help before she was completely lost. It could take her eight years to totally recover.

For Taylor, her stroke was a blessing and a revelation. It taught her that by “stepping to the fitting” of our left brains, we can uncover emotions of well-being which are usually sidelined by “brain chatter.” Reaching wide audiences by way of her talk at the Technology, Leisure, Design (TED) convention and her look at Oprah’s on-line Soul Series, Taylor provides a useful recovery information for those touched by brain damage and an inspiring testimony that inner peace is accessible to anyone.

That is, indeed, a primary-particular person description of stroke by a scientifically and dare I say it — spiritually — subtle person. The author describes a variety of experiences that make sense given our data of localization of function. I’m unsure that such an in depth and consistent report by a scientist is available anyplace else. As such, this story is uncommon and important. Moreover the writer stories how she turned her stroke into an opportunity for profound knowledge and insight. Amazing stuff! And this will likely save lives.

Personally, I do not share all the writer’s ideas about strict purposeful localization in the brain… but that’s secondary and doesn’t detract from my admiration of her remarkable contribution.

My enjoyment of this e-book was enhanced considerably by the material and links on the writer’s website. She has posted numerous video and audio presentations, radio exhibits, etc.
